Electric Owls
Bio
Honestly, This record started a year ago when I decided to stop playing music for a while because being in a band was ruining my life.
And being in a band WILL ruin your life if you do it long enough. No one tells you that. So, after our last tour, I left New York to explore, visit friends and family, and eventually settle somewhere else when my money ran out. But I certainly had no plans to make a record.
What happened though is that I started listening to music again.
I ended up in North Carolina, which was a breath of fresh air. I was at a party, at a friend’s house, something I missed in New York. House parties. It was like 3 a.m. and I could hear people in another room blaring “In an Airplane Over the Sea", by Neutral Milk Hotel and talking about how great it is. And I sunk into this chair and just listened to it coming from down the hall.
It was great, it is great. And something about being in the south makes it ok to study and remember and appreciate it.
So I just started pulling out all of this old stuff and listening and remembering and learning all over again what used to really electrify my heart. Without going into all of the musical references, I will just say that it was all classic and timeless and beautiful stuff. Stuff I had forgotten because it had fallen out of fashion in my mind.
Long story short, I got so excited about music, and more specifically, good songwriting, that I started singing and playing for hours a day again. The songs on the Electric Owls record came about in that 3-4 week period.
Eventually I convinced a bunch of friends to get together and make an epic version of it at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC.
Now here I am, attempting to ruin my life again.
